蝸牛あや（美術作家）/ AYA CAGIU （Artist）
蝸牛あやは1978年神戸市に生まれ、2001年に多摩美術大学彫刻科を卒業しました。
在学中に古美術研究のために訪れた奈良で見た繍仏と、同時期に旅先のトルコで見た民族的な刺繍に強く心を動かされ、刺繍を用いた作品制作をはじめました。
蝸牛は、小説や訪れた町、遺跡などから着想を得て、貝殻や石、落ち葉などをモチーフに制作しています。
長い年月をかけてかたち作られるものと、多くの時間を要する刺繍の制作を重ね、静謐で深遠な世界を持つ独自の表現を生み出してきました。
近年では高松市美術館や横須賀美術館での作品展示、2023年より巡回展「超絶技巧、未来へ！」への出品を経て、刺繍を用いた現代作家の地位を確立しています。

Aya Cagiu born in 1978 in Hyogo, Japan. She graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Tama Art University in 2001. When she was a university student, she visited Nara, Japan, as part of her study of classical art and saw a scroll of embroidered Buddhas. Around that time, on a trip to a small museum in Turkey, she became fascinated by the folk and traditional embroidery, and began creating works using embroidery.
Cagiu inspired by novels, cities and ruins she has visited, she uses stones, shells and fallen leaves as motifs for her works.
She combines her imagination of things that take shape over time and the process of embroidery, which also requires much time, and she has created a unique expression of a tranquil and profound world.
In recent years Cagiu has established herself as a contemporary artist, exhibiting her works at Takamatsu Art Museum and Yokosuka Museum of Art, and a group exhibition tour in Japan ‘In the Genes, Taking Marvelous Meiji Craftsmanship into the Future’ that started in 2023.
